14 novembre My plan to hunt pepper has ended suddenlyI found a great big grocery store that sells all sorts of wonderful, reasonably priced things, including ground black pepper, that most elusive of condiments. So my plan to spend my weekends in London hunting down pepper has ended but with happiness, including a low-cal trifle for dessert ;-) It may suck, but where else in the world can you find a "lite" trifle? Or even pre-packaged trifle at all?
I also found lots of cheap, healthy things for dinner which had been a challenge thus far without being a master chef or having much in the way of cooking implements. I hadn't realized how much I rely mixes and frozen meals for quick, easy dinners. It's a little embarrassing, but there you go. However, this time, I found cheap healthy soups, couscous mixes (they don't understand the concept of non-quick-cook rice mixes), and some fascinating bottled sauces that can be combined with fresh veggies to form curries, etc. YUM!
Thanks to Tove for the tip!! 10 novembre Loving LondonSoooo yeah. It's (as usual) been a while since I posted anything but the big news is that I'm now posting from London. And as soon as I acquire a camera (or go back and get one from home), there will be pictures.
Today I took a break from lots of work and did some shopping. The flat I'm staying in is furnished but it was missing little things like coasters and a timer so my tea doesn't end up a semi-permanent dye. Oh, and a scale, so I don't go crazy from all the fun new types food and gain back all of the weight I've lost in the past few months. Given all the walking, that's not likely, but the espresso maker at work could finish me off, you never know. And the tiny kitchen that makes it oh so tempting to just walk less than a block for Indian takeout. Luckily, with the exchange rate between the pound and the dollar, eating out isn't as tempting as it might be.
I also figured out that iTunes is the one service that will let me buy video from the US so I had a Monk to watch with dinner tonight (YAY!)
I've gotten back into knitting, more as a stress reliever than anything else, but it's been lovely to be able to play with wool again. I brought a bunch of my wool stuff here figuring that 8 time zones is far enough that Clio won't be bothered.
I've just about finished the first glove of Fetching from knitty.com. I had a boo-boo so had to do major frogging this afternoon. I was trying to go too fast and completely misread the directions. But I'm back on track now!
Beyond that, I've been playing on Facebook and checking out what the BBC has to offer. Last night was a great show called QI so I have high hopes for tonight. 08 ottobre Discovering the joys of Facebook (and a relaxing weekend)Went out with friends this weekend to see Michael Clayton (great flick!) and the next day tried out a Segway AND a Wii!! Both were tons of fun and now I have major techno envy.
I've also signed up for Facebook so I can more easily keep up with friends while I'm away in the wonderful world of London. It's pretty cool so far, fun applications and easy ways to interact with people. I haven't found anyone I haven't seen recently yet, but I finally found a few people from high school. I was starting to wonder if it wasn't just me and we were really all that anti-social (or tech backwards, your call 23 settembre Gorgeous tomatoesAs promised, here are photos of a few of the tomatoes. I figure we got about 10 tomatoes from the one plant by the end and they had lovely flavor. They also ripened well inside, an important trait for tomatoes growing in the rainy Northwest :-)
13 settembre Condo finally for sale! After lots of work getting everything ready, my condo is finally ready for sale. Woo hoo!!! If anyone is interested, check it out at http://northwestrealtors.washington.remax.com/listings/ListingDetail_r4.aspx?LID=35253366#aTop. I also have tomatoes turning red so I'll post some photos of those shortly. They taste divine. 10 agosto Floor almost done, time to sellThe new flooring in my condo should be finished up shortly, then it's just a matter of cleaning up the place and listing. If anyone is looking for a cute condo in Duvall, let me know. Mine will be on the market shortly and I will consider discounts for friends :-)
I'll post pictures of the new floor tomorrow when I can actually get in to see it (there have been numerous delays, but all approved so no trauma to report).
In other news, the tomato plant continue to thrive despite having fallen off the porch and being blown over. (It's now attached to the porch by string) Just a few scratch marks to give it "character".
The tomato (in my experience) is a melodramatic plant. I came home last night to a droopy, thirsty plant looking like it was on the edge of death. I panicked, thinking this was what Charles meant when he said tomatoes can break your heart and just die in an instant. I raced over to water it and check the tomatoes to make sure none had dried up. When I came back 15 minutes later, my little drama queen was in perfect form, leaves fully un-drooped and pointed at the sun. Such fun. 02 agosto Never ever use Home DepotI am getting my condo ready to sell, and as part of that process, I am getting tile floors installed in place of my laminate fake wood floors in the kitchen and entry way. After seeing a few recommendations for Home Depot, I thought, why not, they're at least big enough to remember to call back (one of the other people I called was clearly high when I talked to him, and when I asked if he wanted to call me back at a better time, he gratefully said yes and never followed up).
On to Home Depot. Home Despot. Current bane of my existence.
1st trip - Find a tile I kind of like, can't get any samples to take home that night as they would have to special order it. Given I want to sell ASAP, waiting 10 days just to see if I'd like the tile doesn't seem optimal. I asked about tile in stock, do they have samples? Yes, provided I want to buy the individual tiles. Not ideal, feels a bit like a scam, but fine. I buy three tiles in various colors and go home to test them out. Find one that will work, done.
2nd trip - Hand over tile, this is what I want. Choose grout, etc. Pay $50 for someone to come out and measure my floors. Home Despot assures me that someone will call me to schedule a time to come out.
1st phone call - Vendor calls, we schedule time to meet on the weekend.
2nd phone call - Different vendor calls. Tell them I already have something scheduled with first vendor, must be some mix-up.
1st meeting with vendor - No show. Call, leave messages, nothing.
3rd phone call (me to HD) - What happened? Vendor didn't show, no one has followed up, what's the deal?
It turns out HD had neglected to inform me that they sent my information to the wrong vendor the first time around. When they noticed the mistake, they called the first vendor and cancelled the request. Apparently, this also cancelled my appointment although no one told me. Second vendor is correct, HD will make sure they contact me ASAP. I complain fairly vehemently since I would be out $50 with nothing to show for it if I hadn't called. As near as I can tell, HD had no inkling that there was something they needed to follow up on here.
4th phone call (me to 2nd vendor, 5 days later) - Hi, I'm betting you don't know me, but I need to schedule a floor measurement. Vendor: Gosh, you're right, we thought you were working with someone else, but let us schedule you in for a workday measuring or you can wait until the end of the month for a weekend. Fine.
Measuring happens, oh joy unbounded. Luckily, 2nd vendor is cool, very helpful. Will have quote shortly.
5th phone call (HD to me) - Quote available, need to sign paperwork.
Meet with HD, complain a bit about lack of follow-up with vendor from last discussion since I had to call them directly. HD helpful, sign paperwork and hand over credit card. Am assured that everything will go smoothly from here on out.
6th phone call (Vendor to me) - Schedule time, by the way, are you picking up the supplies?
This is news to me. Why is the vendor unable to pick up supplies or why is HD not planning to deliver them?
7th phone call (HD to me) - When do you want to pick up your supplies? Hmmm. Ok, nice of you guys to tell me I needed to do this or pay more money to have you or the vendor take care of it. Schedule time to pick up supplies.
8th, 9th, and 10th phone calls (HD to me) -
Call 8: Out of tile, can you go to Bellevue to pick up? Me: No.
Call 9: Out of tile, not enough time to transfer, can you go to Bellevue to pick up? Me: Will all of my supplies be there?
Call 10: All supplies will be waiting for you at the Special Services desk tonight.
So I drive over to the Bellevue Home Depot last night to pick up all of my supplies. But are they ready and waiting? No. The tile is there, but nothing else. I have to go find all of the other items as no one seems to be available or even willing to help. They can't wait to foist me off on the next person who has no idea who I am or why I am soooooo angry at this point.
Bottom line. Next time, I'm hiring the vendor direct.
Home Depot's stock should be in the toilet; their employees are unhappy, bitter people who have no resources and their stores are incredibly understaffed for the volume of customers they serve. The store computer systems don't even talk to each other - Bellevue had no record of my order at all.
In both of the stores I've been in recently, I've seen people looking at high ticket items ($1,000+) forced to wait for 15 minutes to half an hour to get help. And often, the "help" is "Sorry, not my department". That's just unacceptable, I hope they go under soon.
22 luglio On a happier noteThe plants won't suffer for watering as we'll be here to take care of them. And that's a very good thing because my tomato plant has recently found itself in an "interesting condition". In other words, baby tomatoes are blooming everywhere!
Going homeWith all of the problems, and all of the heartache trying to get to Halifax, you'd think going home would be easy. You'd be wrong. The only flight out with seats available was on Saturday. By pushing the customer service person at the airport, we managed to get ourselves wait-listed for the last flight going to Seattle on Friday. 2 hours of tense waiting later, the gate agent decided the people from a Lufthansa flight weren't going to make it through customs in time and gave us their seats. Home! HOME!! No luggage. We talk to the United representative at baggage claim and find out our luggage is still in Dulles. This isn't entirely a surprise as they'd warned us this would likely happen since we'd gotten on the flight so late. However, instead of "Your luggage is in Dulles, it will be on the next flight out.", we heard "The last scan is Dulles, but that was a while ago. It should still be there, and we'll do our best to get it to you." Not as reassuring. It's now Sunday. United Bag Track now says they can't locate our bags. At all. So we spent $1200 to not go to Halifax and to give clothing, shoes, toiletries, etc to the baggage system. I'm really hoping United will help us out here, but somehow, I doubt it. All of their rules say they don't have to help us in the slightest because we decided to go home. Nevermind the fact that IF we had gotten to Halifax on Saturday night (the absolute earliest we could have, provided many people canceled and the flight didn't), we would have had one full day in Dorchester (essentially a one-day drive away from Halifax) before turning around to fly home. Not the relaxing vacation we were hoping for, by any stretch of imagination. United, if you're listening (and you will be shortly if the letter we're sending reaches anyone), please make this right. Last tryI decided to make the museum and the airport separate posts because one was relatively happy whereas this one... is not. After the shuttle snafu, we still made it to the airport with plenty of time. While the rest of the group wanted to check on their bags, we had done this the night previously and decided to head to the gate. We said our goodbyes and promised to keep in touch since we all live in the same general area and they have kids similar in age to Isobel and Henry. Off to the gate. Off to depression. I guessed that we would be taking off from the A gates since we were flying United Express but Charles wisely wanted to find a departures display before we hopped on the buses for any of the gates. And there it was. Canceled. All this way, all this expense, all this rush. Canceled. Charles dialed United Customer Service from the number saved in his phone and we hopped on a bus to the Customer Service Counter just in case. Once he got to a supervisor, we found out that all flights to Halifax had been canceled. For the next two days. We decided to go home. LatestOn Friday, the group of us abandoned by United decided to make lemonade out of our lemons and go to the National Air and Space Museum - Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center before our late afternoon flights. It was about 15 minutes away from the hotel whereas everything else was more like 45 minutes. The Center houses many of the big planes that won't fit in the main museum like the Enola Gay, a Concorde, and the Enterprise Space Shuttle (training shuttle). It's an amazing facility, out in the middle of nowhere. And, while the planes were gorgeous, I was most excited about the gift shop, where we were able to find t-shirts to replace our worn-for-two-days-on-a-plane stinky ones. We spent about 2 hours exploring and then went outside to wait for the shuttle. We'd agreed with the driver before leaving that he would pick us up at 1 pm so we made sure to be out there by 12:30, just in case. But of course, given out luck thus far, the shuttle would not be arriving at 1. It wouldn't even be arriving at 1:30. After calling and berating the hotel and convincing them that yes, leaving us stranded at a museum when we had a plane to catch really was their problem, the shuttle finally arrived at 1:40. Luckily, we managed to convince (coerce) the driver into waiting to also take us to the airport once we'd grabbed our backpacks. I've included some photos from the museum for your educational edification. 20 luglio Spoke too soonSo up until we were asked to leave the plane, I was planning on writing to United and telling them what a phenomenal job they were doing. Then we ended up in a 6-hour line to try and figure out what they'd done to re-route us. It was only a 6-hour line because they fixed the plane and basically commandeered everyone on to the plane. We only found out later that they had actually rerouted us, but never told us. The humorous bit is, they only got us as far as Toronto on our theoretical rerouting. When Charles called United to find out what our options were, they were most surprised to find out we weren't in Toronto. But they were able to get us on a flight to Halifax out of Dulles today. The same one we would have been on had we stayed at home and tried to do this all over again.
Sigh.
Right now, we're at the Hyatt in DC, about to meet some other folks from our flight for breakfast. We ran into them as we were heading out and they didn't have cell phones, hadn't beeen clearly informed what to do, and without help, were going to be back in a new 4-hour line. Charles and I loaned them our cell phones and got everything sorted out as much as we could. It worked out very much in our favor as the instructions we'd received on the plane about how to get hotel vouchers turned out to be entirely wrong and if we hadn't stopped, we might not have gotten any at all. As it is, we now have a day to kick around DC in yesterday's sweaty clothes but with some lovely people on their way to Provence.
We'll see if we get to Halifax today. Somehow, I have my doubts.
This picture of me is from the first time we were on the plane. Before it all went wrong. 19 luglio HydraulicsWell, life is never easy. We are now sitting on the plane while the maintenance crew checks for the leak in the hydraulics that is causing the puddle. They've agreed to let us off the plane shortly to wander while they work. We've missed our connection to Halifax but the United team has been amazingly good at helping us find new routings, seats together, etc. 18 luglio Halifax - Take 2So we made it to the airport today only to find out that our flight to Dulles had been canceled and that I had forgotten my passport. A truly stunning start to our Halifax adventure. However, silver linings and all that, we are able to have a "do-over" tomorrow on the exact same routing. And Charles received the actual letter from the MP today, versus the fax of the letter we had, so we're that much more legitimate. We had considered seeing if the customs folks would let two people without passports go through but the flight cancellation came up at that point, giving us a graceful way to fix the problem. Stay tuned for tomorrow's adventures across North America. Fingers crossed the worst we will face is some time bitching with the guards about Passport Canada. 17 luglio Passport PurgatoryWe're supposed to leave for Halifax tomorrow. But we're missing a passport. Thanks to Charles' mom, we have a letter from a Canadian MP stating that yes, Charles is a Canadian citizen who has applied for a passport and is stuck while they try to process his paperwork. Given how long they've spent processing (at least a week, probably more like two), it's no wonder they're backlogged.
So, what to do. Apparently, we're going to try anyway. Charles has his green card, and theoretically that's enough to get you back into the US. Fingers crossed. Tightly crossed.
31 maggio Why does easy/cheap = not environmentally friendly?I guess because cheap always comes at the cost of something else, and easy generally means extra resources.
But man I get tired of paying extra for things that should (theoretically) be cheaper.
<stepping up to soapbox>
For example: Organic fruits and vegetables.
If the companies don't have to buy pesticide to use on them, shouldn't they be cheaper? Ok, I know there are other considerations, but still.
How about locally grown/created items?
It didn't have to be shipped or stored or flash frozen, shouldn't that make it cheaper?
Ecologically friendly cleaning supplies?
I have most of the ingredients for these in my own cupboard, why should they cost twice as much as the stuff that's bad for the environment? Leave aside the fact that I should be making my own cleaning supplies, I'm trying to compare apples to apples here. Sort of.
The global economy has a lot to answer for when we make it harder (and more expensive!) for people to support their local economy than to buy goods from thousands of miles away. I get economies of scale, but I also want to support the people who live in my community. But I don't want to go broke doing so!
<stepping down from soapbox>
I'll try to find some cheaper, environmentally friendly alternatives to things we use every day and post them here.
1. It's probably made of something horrible that does terrible things to trees and lakes and streams, but my micro-fiber cleaning cloth gets mirrors clean with a simple application of hot water. No chemicals at all.
2. Vegetable sponges from Trader Joes. Clean great and cheap, something like $4 for 10. I don't know how well they biodegrade, but they have to be better than the plastic sponges. At least, I hope so. 29 marzo Pictures of the play - Threepenny OperaSo... here's what I've been working on for the last 2 months. These are pictures from the full dress rehearsal last night. I'm so excited, it looks amazing! You lucky people in the audience.
Tonight is opening night so I can't post much, but thought I'd share these since they're just so darn cool. 09 marzo Brief postWhat can I say, work picked up, the show picked up, Singing Valentines was a big success, life's been busy.
But tonight, I'm playing in Visual InterDev again for the first time in 5-6 years and it's making me very very happy. I'd forgotten how much fun it is to build web pages and play with graphics. Not like I'm a designer or coder, but I can do simple stuff. My own humble version of creating something. For the totally confused, Visual InterDev is an old Microsoft program for creating web pages. Not many people liked it so it didn't get much love, but I think it's the bee's knees. I used to use it almost every day to update internal web pages but I didn't even have it installed on this computer before tonight.
Threepenny Opera rehearsals continue, now up to 4 a week and most weekends are busy with set painting. However, we've gotten to the actual painter-ly parts of the set, so I'm switching over to helping with costumes. Not that I'll be much more help there, but they've promised to give me simple tasks that don't require me to know how to sew. Whew!
I got to see my costume last night. Well, one of them anyway. It's a gorgeous rose-pink with a lovely full skirt. The little girl in me is doing a happy dance. Of course, I haven't seen the fru-fru wedding dress or the "widow's weeds" so I may yet look entirely silly. But isn't that the point of doing shows?
I took a StrengthsFinder test last weekend out of a book I found in Charles' office called Now Discover Your Strengths. Apparently I'm an Input, Achiever, Relator, Responsibility, Learner, whatever that means. It's an interesting way of looking at yourself. Not to sound like a recent convert, but I'd recommend checking it out. It focuses on enhancing the things you do right versus constantly trying to fix yourself. At least it's less exhausting :-) Ok, back to coding! 22 gennaio Snow pic!As promised, here is a picture from the snow, the thing sticking up is a ruler - 4 inches! And it just kept sticking around, took days to leave. I never thought I would be happy to see the last snow melt away, but there you are. It's impossible to get anything done with that distracting white stuff everywhere! 13 gennaio Ok, let's try that againShortly after my last post, I got a nasty cold. I'm just now recovering. And now, there are 4 inches of snow outside my window that don't seem to want to go away. Life really thinks I should take it easy it seems. I've taken it's advice for the most part, but I have to admit to feeling stir-crazy about now. I've only left my house twice in the past week and that was to go to work. Unfortunately, until this snow thaws, my car is stuck in it's spot. Luckily, Charles was smart and parked down on Main Street so we have some mobility.
Other than rejoicing in the simple acting of breathing, not a heck of a lot is going on. I have several errands piling up at my door for when I can get out, but other than that, life is still quiet. Singing Valentines is happening again so that will keep me busy but until then (next week), I'm enjoying the extra space to putter around.
Oh, and I'll post a picture of the snow once I have my other computer up. It is gorgeous if annoying. |
